Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, but the analysis is inconsistent. While you identify some key data points, the reporting is often inaccurate or confusing. For example, you state that 'children had raised 22' and 'adults 65 and over had raised only 12', which is unclear as these figures represent percentages, not a 'rise'. Additionally, the comparison of the 2007-2016 loan trends is incomplete, as you only mention specific years without describing the overall trend or the final outcome. To improve, ensure you clearly distinguish between percentages and raw numbers and provide a more comprehensive summary of the trends shown in the bar graph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused. For instance, 'Commencing with' and 'However' are used, but the logical flow between sentences is frequently interrupted by unclear referencing and awkward phrasing. The transition between the pie chart data and the bar graph data is abrupt. To improve, focus on using linking words that accurately reflect the relationship between ideas, such as 'in contrast' for comparisons or 'consequently' for results, and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The range of vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. You rely on basic verbs like 'raised' or 'had' to describe data, which lacks the precision required for Task 1. There are also errors in word choice, such as 'children's friction' (likely meaning 'fiction') and 'adult audio books and young adults have 2%', which is grammatically and semantically confusing. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise vocabulary for describing data, such as 'accounted for', 'constituted', 'fluctuated', or 'remained stable', and ensure that you are using the correct terminology for the categories provided in the charts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include missing articles ('in year 2007'), incorrect prepositions, and subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., 'children's DVDs only have 1%'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and periods. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and ensuring that articles are used correctly before nouns.
