Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all three charts provided, identifying key features and making relevant comparisons. You successfully highlighted the dominant age group (18-64) and the popularity of fiction. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, you mention that children's non-fiction is 'half than adult', but the data shows a more specific relationship. Additionally, the description of the bar chart trends is somewhat imprecise, particularly regarding the specific figures for 2012 and 2013. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are cited with greater precision and that comparisons are more clearly linked to the provided figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific chart. There is a clear progression of ideas from the membership demographics to borrowing patterns and finally the historical trend. You use cohesive devices such as 'In terms of', 'Additionally', 'Regarding', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'children gone to library accounted by 22%'. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that pronouns or references clearly point back to their subjects would enhance the cohesion of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'demographics', 'borrowing patterns', and 'gradually increased'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'children gone to library', 'accounted by', and 'sharply inclined towards the peak'. These errors occasionally make the text feel unnatural. To improve, focus on using collocations correctly (e.g., 'accounted for' instead of 'accounted by') and avoid repetitive phrasing. Expanding your repertoire of reporting verbs and descriptive adverbs will help you achieve a more precise and academic tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt to use complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and prepositions (e.g., 'fiction become popular', 'children's and adult which is accounting', 'it become stable'). Some sentences are missing articles or have incorrect word order, which occasionally forces the reader to re-read to understand the intended meaning. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice, which is essential for describing data in Task 1 reports.
