IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart displays information about the number of loaned books from 2007 to 2016 along with a table and a pie chart comparing the categories of loaned books and age groups of the people.
Analyzing the bar chart, it can be observed that just over 15,000 books were loaned in 2007, marking the lowest figure of the chart. A steady rise in the data was seen in the following years, to finally record 21,000 loaned books in 2011. However, the numbers reduced to just below 20,000 in 2013. Over the next 3 years the numbers grew gradually with reaching the final figure of over 21,000 books loaned in 2016.
The table compares the loaned books by it category in 2016. Books related to children's and adult fiction accounted for 38% each of the total loans. Genre of adult non-fiction accounted for 13% share. Other categories held smaller proportions ranging from 1% to 6%.
Moreover, in 2016, most of the library members were adults, with a number of 51. Less numbers of people belonging to other age groups were recorded.
All in all, it evident from the bar chart that the figures of loaned books experienced considerable fluctuations with finally displaying peaked value in 2016. Fiction books were the most popular amongst all categories in 2016 with highest number of adult members in the library.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all three visual elements provided. You have identified the main trends in the bar chart and highlighted key data points from the table and pie chart. However, the comparison between the data sets could be more integrated. For instance, while you mention that fiction books were popular and adult members were the majority, you could have explicitly linked the age group data to the book categories to provide a more analytical summary. The overview is present but could be more distinct in highlighting the most significant trends across all three charts rather than just the bar chart.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear paragraph structure. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the data, which helps the reader follow the information easily. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Analyzing the bar chart', 'However', 'Moreover', and 'All in all' to connect ideas. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid and that referencing (e.g., 'the numbers', 'the figures') is always precise to avoid any ambiguity.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly, using terms like 'accounted for', 'proportions', and 'fluctuations'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'Less numbers of people' (should be 'Fewer') and 'displaying peaked value' (should be 'reaching a peak'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the precision is occasionally lacking. Expanding your repertoire of reporting verbs and descriptive adjectives would help elevate the sophistication of your writing and allow for more precise comparisons.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Books related to children's and adult fiction accounted for 38% each' (the phrasing is slightly awkward) and 'with a number of 51' (which is unclear—does this refer to a percentage or a raw count?). Additionally, 'It evident' is missing the verb 'is'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will improve your accuracy.
