Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given pie chart and graph illustrates data about Little Chalfont Library.

Overall, It was evident that adults were the highest users of this library with children being the second. Additionally, total loans were given mostly for adult and child fiction genres while the figure for it showed ups and down though it was mostly steady.

The pie chart and the table showed the people aged from 18-64 were the regular visitors with 51% which was the most out of all ages. The children were second highest visitors (22%) while the young adults and the elderly were lowest in figure with both less than 15%(15% and 12%, respectively).

The graph showed no dramatic increment though the highest number was marked at a bit more than 20,000. The number started off with a bit more than 15,000 in 2007 then rose slightly more than 20,000 from year 2010 to 2012. Moreover, after that the number dropped slightly less than 15,000 before it rose to more than 20,000 from year 2014 to till the last year 2016 which was almost similar as 2010 to 2012.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of both the pie chart and the line graph. You successfully identified the age demographics and the trends in library loans. However, the report lacks precision in data reporting. For example, you mention 'a bit more than 20,000' and 'a bit more than 15,000' rather than using more precise language or approximations. Additionally, while you mention the genres in the introduction, you do not actually describe the data regarding fiction genres in the body paragraphs, which is a missed opportunity for a more complete summary. To improve, ensure all key data points mentioned in the introduction are supported by specific details in the body.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'while', which help the flow of information. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'the figure for it showed ups and down', where 'it' does not clearly refer back to a specific noun. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the demographic data to the temporal trends shown in the graph.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'demographics', 'regular visitors', and 'dramatic increment'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'lowest in figure' instead of 'lowest percentage' or 'lowest proportion'. The phrase 'to till the last year' is also awkward and non-standard. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score. Focusing on more academic collocations and precise reporting verbs would enhance your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The given pie chart and graph illustrates') and awkward phrasing ('which was almost similar as 2010 to 2012'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors, such as the unnecessary capitalization of 'It' in the second paragraph. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of comparative structures.
