Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given pie chart and graph illustrate data about Little Chalfont Library.

Overall, it was evident that adults were the highest users of this library with children being the second. Additionally, total loans were given mostly for adult and child fiction genres while the figure for it showed fluctuations though it was mostly steady.

The pie chart and the table showed the people aged from 18-64 were the highest regular visitors (51%) and the children were second most visitors (22%) as it was approximately 73% of the total members. Conversely, the young adults and the elderly were low in percentage(15% and 12%, respectively) which was merely 27% of the whole proportion.

The graph showed no dramatic increase though the highest number was marked at roughly more than 20,000. The amount started off with more than 15,000 in 2007 then rose slightly over 20,000 from the year 2010 to 2012. Moreover, after 2012 the loan amount dipped to less than 20,000 before it crossed 20,000 from year 2014 to 2016 which was almost the same as 2010 to 2012.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of both the pie chart and the line graph. You successfully identified the highest and lowest user groups and described the trend in library loans over the specified period. However, the analysis could be more precise. For instance, you mention 'total loans were given mostly for adult and child fiction genres', but the provided prompt does not explicitly label the graph as 'fiction' loans, which suggests a slight misinterpretation of the data source. Additionally, while you mention the figures fluctuated, you could have provided more specific comparisons between the years to better highlight the 'main features' as requested by the task instructions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the demographic data to the temporal trends. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Additionally', 'Conversely', and 'Moreover' to link your sentences effectively. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the second paragraph could be smoother. For example, the phrase 'the figure for it showed fluctuations' is a bit vague regarding what 'it' refers to. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to a coherent reading experience.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuations', 'proportion', and 'dramatic increase'. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'the figure for it showed' and 'the amount started off'. The use of 'second most visitors' is slightly awkward; 'the second largest group of visitors' would be more natural. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to data description, such as 'remained relatively stable' or 'experienced a marginal decline' instead of 'dipped'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the people aged from 18-64 were the highest regular visitors' (should be 'those aged' or 'people aged') and 'the children were second most visitors' (missing 'the'). Additionally, 'the amount started off with more than 15,000' is slightly unnatural; 'the number of loans began at' would be better. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles.
