IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The pie chart and the table provided demonstrate the age and total loans by category of members in 2016, while the bar chart illustrates the total number of loans granted between 2007 and 2016. Overall, it can be observed that most of the library members are adults, aging between 18 years to 64 years, while adult members that are 65 years or more are the least in number. The table, however, shows that children and adult fiction were the most borrowed categories while children's DVDs was the smallest category. The bar chart signifies a general surge in the total number of loans throughout the period, with some mixed pattern and fluctuations in the middle.
Little Chalfont library consists of: 51% of adult members that are above 18 years and below 65 years, 22% children, 15% young adults of ages between 13 and 17 years, and 12% adults who are 65 years and above.
In 2016, the children's and the adult fictions were the two genre's that had the most number of loans, with each having 38% loan percentage each. These two categories were followed by the children's and the adult non-fiction books that had 6% and 13%, respectively. The least loans were of adult audio books, young adults and children's DVDs that stood at 2%, 2% and 1%, in that order.
In 2007, the total number of books loaned was just over 15,000, but it subsequently increased gradually till 2011 to reach over 20,000. After 2011, this figure declined till 2013 and became a little below 20,000. Later on, it continuously rose until 2016, where it finally settled at approximately 22,000.
