IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The data acquired from the Little Chalfont Library from the years 2007 to 2016 regarding how many books had been loaned out to different age group of people. The age group includes children, young adult, adults and at last elderly people over the age of 65.
As shown, in 2007 loans were distributed a little over 15,000 which can be considered as the least number of books borrowed till 2016. In 2008 & 2009, it stayed constant but in 2010, it had crossed 20,000 loans for the first time. Loans then never crossed the lower mark of 20,000 till 2016 except in 2013, where it was very little below the said mark. 2016 had the highest number of loans sanctioned.
In 2016, Children's friction and adult fiction has the highest percentage loans dispersed i.e 38% which can justified as children and adults holds the most percentage of membership which is 22% and 51% respectively.
Least borrowed category is the children's DVD, young adults and adult audio books.
Data shown below clearly suggest that children and adults are more interested in friction rather then video and audio books and that likeness has gradually increased from 2007 to 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the charts, such as the overall trend in book loans and the breakdown of preferences in 2016. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. The introduction is a sentence fragment rather than a complete sentence. While you identify the highest and lowest categories, the comparison between the membership percentages and loan percentages in the third paragraph is slightly confusing and lacks clarity. To improve, ensure you clearly distinguish between the two different charts provided and provide a more cohesive summary of the trends rather than listing isolated data points. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and could better synthesize the overall findings.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate. For instance, the transition 'at last elderly people' is unnatural, and the phrase 'which can justified as' lacks a necessary auxiliary verb. The progression of ideas is generally logical, but the connection between the first chart (loans over time) and the second chart (preferences by age) is abrupt. Using more sophisticated linking words like 'consequently', 'in contrast', or 'furthermore' would help improve the flow between sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey the main points, such as 'distributed', 'constant', and 'percentage'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and spelling mistakes that hinder precision. For example, you use 'friction' instead of 'fiction' throughout the text, and 'dispersed' is not the most appropriate term for library loans. Additionally, 'sanctioned' is used incorrectly in the context of book loans. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensure you proofread for spelling errors, especially with key terms related to the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'how many books had been loaned out to different age group of people' (should be 'groups') and 'children and adults holds' (subject-verb agreement error). The sentence 'In 2007 loans were distributed a little over 15,000' is missing a preposition or clearer phrasing. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions.
