Student answer (Band 7.0)
The charts present information about membership demographics, borrowed patterns and the total number of loans at a public library in Little Chalfont.
Overall, adults aged 18-64 constituted the largest proportion of library members, while fiction accounted for the majority of loans, with children's and adults fiction each representing 38%. In addition, the total number of items borrowed increased considerably between 2007 and 2016, despite a temporary decline in the middle of the period.
Looking first at the membership profile, adults aged 18-64 accounted by far the largest dominant group, at 51%. Children formed as the second largest group, at 22%, followed by young adults aged 13-17 at 15%. Adults aged 65 and over making up the smallest share, at 12%. The borrowed figures showed a strong preference for fictions. Children's fiction and adult fiction both were equally popular, each account for 38% of total loans. Adult non-fiction was the next most frequently borrowed category, at 13%, while children's non-fiction represented 6%. The remaining categories were relatively insignificant, with young adults and adult audio books each constituted 2%, and children's DVDs making up just 1%.
Turning to the total number of loans, approximately 15,800 items were borrowed in 2007. This figure rose sharply to around 18,900 in 2008 and remained almost unchanged in 2009. It then increased steadily, reaching a peak of approximately 21,000 loans in 2011.There was subsequently a modest fall over the following two years, with the number dropping to about 19,500 in 2013. However, borrowing recovered from 2014 onwards, rising to roughly 21,500 loans by 2016, the highest figure recorded during the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all three charts provided. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the dominant age group in membership, the preference for fiction in borrowing, and the overall upward trend in total loans. The comparisons are relevant, particularly when contrasting the different categories of books. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the data. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with complete accuracy; for instance, ensure that the distinction between 'fiction' and 'non-fiction' is consistently clear throughout the report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, a body paragraph for each chart, and a concise overview. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you have used a range of cohesive devices such as 'Looking first at', 'Turning to', and 'subsequently' to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different data sets. The flow is natural, and the relationship between the different parts of the data is well-managed, making the information easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'demographics', 'constituted', 'proportion', and 'insignificant' appropriately. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'accounted by far the largest dominant group' (should be 'accounted for by far the largest group') and 'borrowed figures' (should be 'borrowing figures' or 'loan figures'). However, these errors do not impede communication. The use of vocabulary is generally precise and fits the academic tone required for Task 1.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'Children formed as the second largest group' (should be 'Children formed the second largest group') and 'each account for' (should be 'each accounted for' to maintain tense consistency). Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and sentence structure is strong enough to ensure clarity throughout the report.
