Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task, including the membership demographics, borrowing categories, and the trend over time. The main features are identified, and comparisons are made, such as noting that adult members were the largest group and fiction was the most popular material. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by some inaccuracies in data reporting (e.g., the description of the borrowing categories is confusingly phrased). While the key features are highlighted, the overview could be more effectively integrated to provide a clearer summary of the trends. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt adequately.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into three distinct paragraphs: an introduction/overview, a breakdown of membership and categories, and a summary of the trend over time. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition', 'Regarding', and 'Thereafter', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the second paragraph where the grouping of data points becomes somewhat cluttered. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different types of information provided in the charts.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with attempts to use specific terms like 'proportion', 'constituted', and 'substantially'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'far most type of material' instead of 'the most popular type' and 'slightly lowest' which is grammatically incorrect. There are also minor errors in punctuation and pluralization, such as 'children ‘s DVD ‘s'. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of precision in vocabulary limits the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The figure remains unchanged' should be 'remained'), incorrect verb forms ('continued to increased'), and missing articles. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of apostrophes. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency and accuracy of the writing.
