IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The pie chart, table and bar chart show who used Little Chalfont Library between 2007 and 2016, what kinds of books they borrowed, and how total loans changed year by year.
Two things stand out. Total loans went up across the decade, even though the growth wasn't perfectly smooth. And by 2016, fiction was by far the most borrowed category, largely because adults and children made up most of the library's members in the first place.
Starting with who the members were, adults aged 18 to 64 made up just over half of the total in 2016, at 51%. Children came next at 22%, then young adults aged 13 to 17 at 15%, and finally the 65 plus group at 12%. Borrowing habits lined up closely with this split. Fiction accounted for 38% of loans among both adults and children, so together these two groups were behind 76% of all fiction borrowing. Non-fiction lagged well behind, making up 13% of adult loans but only 6% of children's. Everything else was minor. Audio books and young adult titles each sat at 2%, children's DVDs at just 1%, adding up to only 5% of loans between them.
As for the trend over time, loans rose from around 15,800 in 2007 to close to 22,000 by 2016. The biggest single jump happened early on, between 2007 and 2008, when the figure passed 18,000. There was one noticeable dip, around 2013, when loans fell back under 20,000, but apart from that, numbers held above 20,000 for most of the remaining years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively covers all three charts provided. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the dominance of adult members and the overall upward trend in loans, while making relevant comparisons between the data sets. The inclusion of specific data points (e.g., 51% for adults, 15,800 to 22,000 for trends) demonstrates a clear focus on the task requirements. The overview provided in the second paragraph is concise and highlights the most significant trends, which is a key requirement for a high band score in Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, a well-defined overview, and separate paragraphs for the demographic data and the temporal trends. Cohesive devices such as 'Starting with', 'As for the trend', and 'apart from that' are used effectively to guide the reader through the information. The progression of ideas is smooth, and each paragraph has a clear central topic. The use of referencing is accurate, ensuring that the relationships between the different charts are easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a report, using terms like 'accounted for', 'lagged well behind', and 'noticeable dip'. The language is precise and natural. While the vocabulary is sufficient and accurate, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated or 'less common' lexical items to reach the highest band. However, the current usage is error-free and effectively conveys the information without repetition.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The writing displays a variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('even though the growth wasn't perfectly smooth') and compound-complex sentences. The grammar is highly accurate, with no noticeable errors in punctuation or syntax. The control over tense usage—switching between the present for the pie chart and past for the trend analysis—is handled correctly, which is essential for this type of task.
