Student answer (Band 7.5)
The pie chart, table, and bar chart present data regarding membership demographics, loan categories, and total annual borrowings at Little Chalfont Library between 2007 and 2016.
Overall, total annual library loans experienced an upward trend over the ten-year period, despite minor fluctuations. Furthermore, fiction dominated borrowing activity in 2016, driven primarily by adult members and children, who together constituted the vast majority of library users.
In terms of demographics, adults aged 18 to 64 represented slightly over half of all library members in 2016 at 51%. Children accounted for the second-largest demographic segment at 22%, followed by young adults aged 13–17 (15%) and adults aged 65 and over (12%). Correspondingly, borrowing patterns heavily favored fiction books for both children and adults, each comprising an identical 38% share of total loans (76% combined). Non-fiction was far less popular, accounting for 13% of adult loans and 6% of children's loans. Media formats and young adult materials saw minimal borrowing, with audio books (2%), young adult items (2%), and children's DVDs (1%) combined accounting for only 5% of total borrowing.
Regarding overall usage from 2007 to 2016, total annual loans increased from approximately 15,800 in 2007 to a peak of nearly 22,000 in 2016. The most significant rise occurred between 2007 and 2008, when loans jumped past 18,000. Apart from a brief dip around 2013 to under 20,000 borrowings, total loans remained consistently above the 20,000 mark for most of the decade.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively covers all requirements of the task. You have successfully identified the main features of the data, including the demographic breakdown, the specific loan categories, and the overall trend in annual borrowings. The comparisons are relevant and well-integrated, such as the observation that fiction was the dominant category for both children and adults. The overview is clear and provides a concise summary of the trends. You have used data accurately to support your points, and the information is presented in a logical, analytical manner that fully addresses the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the introduction and overview, the demographic and category breakdown, and the historical trend. Cohesive devices such as 'In terms of,' 'Correspondingly,' and 'Regarding' are used effectively to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the relationship between the different charts is well-managed. The flow of information is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have demonstrated a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic task. Phrases such as 'membership demographics,' 'upward trend,' 'minor fluctuations,' and 'constituted the vast majority' show a sophisticated command of language. The use of specific terminology related to the charts is accurate. While the vocabulary is precise and fits the context well, there is room to incorporate slightly more varied or less common collocations to reach the highest band, but the current range is more than sufficient for a high score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The writing displays a high level of grammatical control. You have used a variety of complex sentence structures, such as the participial phrase 'driven primarily by adult members' and the concessive clause 'despite minor fluctuations.' The majority of your sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. There is a consistent use of accurate verb tenses to describe historical data. The grammatical range is wide, and the accuracy is high, with no errors that impede communication or cause confusion.
