Student answer (Band 8.0)
The charts provide information about the members of Little Chalfont Library in 2016, the categories of loans made in that year, and the total number of loans between 2007 and 2016.
Overall, adults aged 18–64 formed the largest proportion of library members, while adult and children's fiction were the most frequently borrowed items. In addition, the total number of loans generally increased over the ten-year period despite some minor fluctuations.
Regarding library membership, adults aged 18–64 accounted for the majority of members at 51%. Children made up 22% of the total membership, while young adults aged 13–17 represented 15%. The smallest group was adults aged 65 and over, comprising 12% of members.
In terms of borrowing categories, fiction dominated lending activity. Both children's fiction and adult fiction accounted for 38% of total loans each, together making up more than three-quarters of all borrowing. Adult non-fiction represented 13%, while children's non-fiction stood at 6%. The remaining categories were relatively insignificant, with young adults and adult audio books each accounting for 2%, and children's DVDs making up only 1%.
Looking at the total number of loans, there was an overall upward trend from approximately 16,000 loans in 2007 to just over 21,500 in 2016. The figure rose steadily until 2011, reaching around 21,000 loans. It then experienced slight fluctuations, falling to just under 20,000 in 2013 before recovering and reaching its highest level at the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response is excellent. You have successfully identified and reported all the main features of the three charts provided. The overview is clear and effectively synthesizes the key trends, such as the dominance of fiction loans and the overall upward trajectory of total library usage. You have made relevant comparisons, such as noting that children's and adult fiction together account for over three-quarters of all borrowing. The data is accurately selected and presented, and the response fully satisfies the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, a concise overview, and separate paragraphs for each data set. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving logically from membership demographics to borrowing categories and finally to the ten-year trend. Cohesive devices such as 'Regarding', 'In terms of', and 'Looking at' are used effectively to guide the reader through the different charts. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct topics, ensuring the information is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a strong command of vocabulary, using precise terms such as 'proportion', 'fluctuations', 'dominated', and 'upward trend'. The language is natural and appropriate for an academic report. There are no noticeable errors in word choice or collocation. While the vocabulary is accurate and functional, incorporating a few more sophisticated synonyms or collocations could elevate the response further, but the current range is more than sufficient for a high band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The grammar is highly accurate throughout the response. You utilize a variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., '...despite some minor fluctuations', '...reaching around 21,000 loans'). Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no grammatical errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent and precise.
