Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main features of the charts, but it fails to complete the task as the final sentence is cut off mid-thought. While you identify some data points, the reporting is inconsistent. For instance, you mention 'one fourth' for two different age groups in 2016, but the data interpretation lacks precision. Furthermore, the comparison between the categories in the bar chart is confusing, and the failure to finish the summary significantly impacts the overall task completion. To improve, ensure you provide a clear overview of the trends and select only the most significant data points to support your summary, ensuring the response is fully concluded.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression is hindered by awkward phrasing and a lack of cohesive devices. Transitions between sentences are often mechanical or missing, making the text feel like a list of observations rather than a cohesive report. For example, the shift from the pie chart to the bar chart is abrupt. Using linking words like 'In contrast,' 'Furthermore,' or 'Regarding the bar chart' would help guide the reader more effectively. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the relationship between the data points presented.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. You rely heavily on basic structures like 'is occupied by' or 'is contributed by'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'the smallest portion of loans was took up by', which is grammatically incorrect and stylistically weak. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'accounted for', 'constituted', or 'represented'. Expanding your range of verbs and adjectives to describe trends—such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'remained stable'—will significantly enhance the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'bar chart reflected' (should be 'reflects') and 'least numbers of loans was recorded'. The use of articles is also inconsistent, and sentence structures are generally simple. The final sentence is incomplete, which is a major grammatical and structural failure. To improve, focus on mastering basic tense consistency—using the past tense for historical data—and ensure that your sentences have a clear subject and verb. Practising complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses, will also help improve your score.
