Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie chart illustrates the proportion of library members across different age groups, while table compares the total loans across different categories in 2016, with the bar graph representing the number of loans between 2007 and 2016.

Overall, adults aged 18 to 64 accounted for the largest share of library members, while those aged 65 and above represented the lowest. In terms of loans, children's fiction and adult fiction had taken the highest number of loans, while the children's DVDs represented the lowest percentage.

The age group of 18 to 64 accounted for 51% share of library members, followed by children, at 22%. However, young adults aged 13-17 and adults aged 65 and above covered 15% and 12%.

Regarding the table, children's fiction and adult fiction accounted for the highest proportion of loans, at 38% each, compared with 13% for adult non-fiction and only 6% for children's non-fiction. By contrast, children's DVDs recorded the lowest percentages, at only 1%, whereas young adults and adult audio books represented 2% for each.

According to the bar graph, around 15,000 loans had been taken in 2007, while the number reached approximately 22,000 loans in 2011, after recording around 18,000 in 2008 and 2009, while about 21,000 in 2010. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main features of all three charts. The overview provides a clear summary of the key trends and proportions, which is essential for a high band score. You have made relevant comparisons, such as contrasting the high popularity of fiction with the low figures for DVDs. However, the report could be improved by grouping the data more analytically rather than just listing figures. For example, you could have grouped the loan categories by genre or media type to provide a more cohesive analysis. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to each chart. The use of cohesive devices such as 'In terms of', 'However', 'Regarding', and 'By contrast' helps guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different data sets. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions between sentences in the final paragraph feel slightly repetitive, as you rely heavily on listing numbers. Improving the variety of linking phrases would further enhance the logical progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information precisely. Phrases like 'accounted for the largest share', 'recorded the lowest percentages', and 'peaked in the last two years' are well-chosen and appropriate for an academic report. There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary is used accurately throughout. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or synonyms to avoid repeating words like 'represented' and 'accounted for' multiple times.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is good. There are minor slips, such as 'while table compares' (missing an article) and 'represented 2% for each' (slightly awkward phrasing). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. You have successfully used a variety of verb tenses to describe the data, including the past simple for historical trends and the present tense for the static charts.
