The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
The charts provide information about the membership of the Little Chalfont Library by age group, the categories of items borrowed in 2016, and the total number of loans between 2007 and 2016.
Overall, adults aged 18–64 made up the largest proportion of library members, while young adults aged 13–17 represented the smallest group. In terms of borrowing, fiction was the most popular category among both children and adults. The total number of loans generally increased over the period, despite some fluctuations.
In 2016, adults aged 18–64 accounted for 51% of library members, which was more than half of the total. Children were the second-largest group, at 22%, followed by young adults aged 13–17 at 15%. The remaining 12% consisted of adults aged 65 and over.
Regarding loans by category, children's fiction and adult fiction were equally popular, each accounting for 38% of all loans. Adult non-fiction was the third most borrowed category, at 13%, while children's non-fiction represented 6%. Young adults and adult audio books each accounted for 2%, and children's DVDs were the least popular item, at just 1%.
The total number of loans rose from approximately 15,500 in 2007 to around 21,500 in 2016. There was a significant increase between 2007 and 2008, followed by a gradual rise to about 21,000 in 2011. The figure then fluctuated slightly, falling to roughly 19,500 in 2013 before increasing again. By 2016, the number of loans had reached its highest point at approximately 21,500.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response is excellent. You have successfully identified all key features of the three charts: the age distribution of members, the breakdown of borrowed items, and the trend in total loans over time. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with accurate data, such as the 51% share for adults and the specific loan figures for 2007 and 2016. The comparisons are relevant and well-integrated, such as noting that fiction was the most popular category across both age groups. You have fully addressed all parts of the prompt with a logical and analytical approach.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is well-structured with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a clear focus: the introduction, the overview, the membership demographics, the borrowing categories, and the historical trend. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In terms of,' 'Regarding,' and 'The figure then,' which help the reader follow the narrative smoothly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different data sets, and referencing is clear throughout. The flow is natural and professional.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a strong command of vocabulary appropriate for an Academic Task 1 report. You use precise terminology such as 'proportion,' 'fluctuations,' 'accounted for,' and 'gradual rise.' The language is natural and fits the context of describing statistical data well. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation. While the vocabulary is accurate and functional, incorporating a few more sophisticated synonyms for 'increase' or 'popular' could elevate the response further, but the current range is already very effective for this task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
Your grammar is highly accurate, with a variety of complex sentence structures used correctly. You effectively use subordinate clauses and participial phrases, such as 'followed by a gradual rise to about 21,000 in 2011.' Punctuation is used correctly to manage complex information, and there are no noticeable grammatical errors. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the report. This reflects a high level of grammatical competence.
