The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The pie chart and the table illustrates the information about the different age category of library members and total loans category in 2016 whereas the bar graph depicts the total number of loans from 2007 to 2016.
It can be clearly seen that in the pie chart maximum number of members were in the age group of adults 18-64 which were 51. These were followed by children and young adults which were 22 and 15 respectively. The adults who were 65 and above were 12 members in the Little Chalfont library. The table data shows the percentage of total loans by category in 2016. The children's fiction and adult fiction were the same 38%. Similarly, the adult audio books and the young adult were also the same 2%. The adult non-fiction was accounted for 13% whereas the children's non-fiction was 6%. The lowest holding proportion was the children's DVD's which was 1%.
Evidently, it was clear from the bar graph that the total number of loans in 2007 were 16000 whereas in 2008 and 2009 the number of loans were the same 19000. The next two years there was a increase and the reached to 22000 approximately. In further two years, the total number of loans experienced a decline and reached below 20000 in 2013. However, in the next three years a steady growth was seen in the total number of loans and reached to 23000 approxi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all three charts provided in the prompt. You successfully identify the main features, such as the dominant age group in the pie chart and the trends in the bar graph. However, the report is incomplete as it ends abruptly mid-sentence ('approxi'). Furthermore, while you mention the data, you could improve by making more explicit comparisons between the categories rather than just listing the figures. For instance, noting that adult fiction and children's fiction together account for over 75% of loans would add analytical depth. To reach a higher band, ensure you complete your sentences and provide a more cohesive summary of the data trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the different charts. You use some cohesive devices like 'whereas', 'similarly', and 'however' to link ideas. However, the flow is interrupted by the incomplete ending, which negatively impacts the overall coherence. Additionally, some transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical. To improve, ensure that your paragraphs have a clear topic sentence and that you use a wider variety of linking words to connect the data points more fluidly, rather than just listing them one after another.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'depicts', 'accounted for', and 'steady growth'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'the reached to 22000' (should be 'reached 22000') and 'lowest holding proportion' (which is slightly awkward). The vocabulary is generally sufficient to convey the meaning, but it lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations related to data description, such as 'a significant proportion' or 'a marginal increase'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The pie chart and the table illustrates' should be 'illustrate') and missing articles ('a increase' should be 'an increase'). Additionally, there are awkward phrasings like 'the number of loans were the same 19000'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the data, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
