IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart and the table illustrates the information about the different age categories of library members and total loans category in 2016 whereas the bar graph depicts the total number of loans from 2007 to 2016.
It can be clearly seen that in the pie chart the maximum number of members were in the age group of adults 18-64 which were 51. These were followed by children and young adults which were 22 and 15 respectively. The adults who were 65 and above were 12 members in the Little Chalfont library. The table data shows the percentage of total loans by category in 2016. The children's fiction and adult fiction were the same 38%. Similarly, the adult audio books and the young adult were also the same 2%. The adult non-fiction accounted for 13% whereas the children's non-fiction was 6%. The lowest holding proportion was the children's DVD's which was 1%.
Evidently, it was clear from the bar graph that the total number of loans in 2007 was 16000 whereas in 2008 and 2009 the number of loans was the same 19000. The next two years there was a increase and the reached to 22000 approximately. In further two years, the total number of loans experienced a decline and reached below 20000 in 2013. However, in the next three years a steady growth was seen in the total number of loans and reached to 23000 approximately.
Overall, the highest members were 51 in the age category of 18-64 whereas lowest members were 12 in the age group of 65 and over in the Little Chalfont Library. The two category holds the highest proportion in the total loans list while all other category are below 10% except the adult non-fiction. The bar graph witnessed a fluctuating trend throughout the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all three charts and identifies key features, such as the dominant age group (18-64) and the fluctuating trend in loans. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical, relying on listing data points rather than synthesising information. For instance, the report on the pie chart simply lists the numbers without effectively grouping them to highlight the contrast between the largest and smallest segments. While the main features are reported, the comparison between categories could be more analytical. To reach a higher band, focus on grouping data to tell a clearer story rather than just transcribing figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organised into four paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each chart, and a summary. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Evidently', 'However', and 'Similarly', though some transitions feel slightly repetitive or mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different data sets. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the final paragraph repeats information already stated in the body, which adds little value to the overall summary. Improving the flow between sentences would help to make the writing feel more cohesive and less like a list of facts.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with terms like 'accounted for', 'fluctuating trend', and 'proportion' used correctly. However, there is a lack of variety in reporting verbs and descriptive language. The student relies heavily on 'was' and 'were' to describe data. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'The two category holds' (should be 'The two categories hold') and 'lowest holding proportion'. To improve, incorporate more sophisticated synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' and ensure better control over pluralisation and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'The pie chart and the table illustrates' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'there was a increase and the reached to' (missing subject and incorrect preposition). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The punctuation is generally accurate, but the sentence construction could be more varied to demonstrate better control over complex structures. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
