The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The three charts provide information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont. Amon them the pie charts illustrates the age of library members in 2016 and the table shows the percentage of loans taken by different categories the same year. Moreover, the bar chart compares the number of loans taken by the library from 2007 to 2016.
Overall, it can be seen that adults aged 18-64 had the largest proportion of members and highest amount of loans was taken for adult fiction and children fiction. However, the number of loans increased overall, although experienced moderate fluctuation over the period.
In 2006, 51% of library members were adults aged 18-54, followed by children at 22%. Young adults aged 13-17 and adults 65 and over accounted for 15% and 12% respectively.
In terms of loans, adult fiction and children's fiction each accounted for 38%. This is followed by adult non-fiction at 13%. Children's non-fiction and children's DVDs represented 6% and 1% of total loans respectively. However, Young adults and adult audio books each took only 2% of total loans.
Total number of loans stood at around 15,0000 in 2007. The figure increased slightly to approximately 18,0000 and remained stable until 2009. Then the number rose gradually to about 21,000 in 2011 before falling slightly to around 19,000 in 2013. Thereafter, the figure continued its upward trend and reach a peak of around 22,000 by the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all parts of the prompt well. You have successfully identified the main features of the three charts and provided relevant comparisons. The overview is clear and highlights the key trends and proportions effectively. Data is used to support the main points, such as the age distribution and the loan categories. However, there is a minor inconsistency in the data reporting: you mention 15,0000 and 18,0000, which appear to be typos for 15,000 and 18,000. Despite this, the overall summary is accurate and well-structured, meeting the requirements for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the data, which aids readability. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Overall', 'In terms of', and 'Thereafter' are used effectively to guide the reader through the information. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the paragraphing is appropriate. There is a slight mechanical feel to some transitions, but the overall structure is coherent and easy to follow throughout the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Terms like 'proportion', 'accounted for', 'upward trend', and 'fluctuation' are used appropriately. There are some minor errors, such as 'Amon them' (likely a typo for 'Among them') and the previously mentioned numerical errors. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms for 'increased' and 'decreased' would elevate the response further. The current range is sufficient to communicate clearly without difficulty.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are a few slips, such as 'the pie charts illustrates' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'reach a peak' (should be 'reached'). Additionally, the numerical typos (15,0000) affect the accuracy of the data presentation. However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The control of punctuation and sentence structure is generally good, supporting a solid band 7 performance.
