Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart illustrates the information about the age of Little Chalfont library members in 2016. The table represents the total number of loans by category in the same year. The bar graph compares the total of loan in library from 2007 to 2016.

Overall, it is evident that the majority of library members were adults aged 18-64, while only few members were adults age ranging 65 and over. The table shows that children's fiction and adult fiction experienced highest proportion of total loans, whereas children's DVDs accounted for the lowest percentage. Additionally, the bar graph depicts the fluctuations in total number of loans throughout the period. It illustrates that the total number of loans were less in 2007. In contrast, the number of loans were more in 2016.

In 2016, adults (18-64) accounted for the largest proportion of membership at 51%. However, adults ( 65 and over) represented the lowest percentage at 12%. It showed that 22% of library members were children. Subsequently, 12% were young adults(13-17).

The table shows that 38% loans were taken for children's and adult fiction, while children's DVDs, young adults and adult audio books experienced 1%, 2%, and 2% respectively. The bar graphs illustrates fluctuations throughout the period. In 2007, the total number of loans were around 16000, it rose slightly to about 18000 in 2009, before increasing to approximately 21000 in 2011. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all three charts effectively, providing a clear overview and highlighting key features. You successfully identified the largest and smallest categories in the pie chart and table, and noted the trend in the bar graph. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the data sets where possible, rather than listing them separately. For instance, you could have linked the high number of loans in 2016 to the specific age demographics mentioned. The summary is accurate, but ensure that all data points are clearly linked to the specific visual aid they originate from to avoid any ambiguity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast,' 'Additionally,' and 'Finally' to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different charts. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother; some sentences feel slightly disjointed, such as the sudden shift from the pie chart to the table. Using a wider variety of cohesive markers and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'it,' 'this') is always precise will further improve the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly, using terms like 'proportion,' 'fluctuations,' 'marginally,' and 'peaked.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'Furtherafter' (which is not standard English) and 'total of loan' (should be 'total number of loans'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or topic-specific synonyms would enhance the quality of your writing. Overall, the vocabulary is functional and allows for precise reporting of the data provided in the charts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement, such as 'the total number of loans were' (should be 'was') and 'children's and adult fiction' (should be 'children's and adult fiction loans'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation issues, such as missing spaces after commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on consistent subject-verb agreement and refining your use of articles will help improve your accuracy.
