Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given charts provide information about a public library in a town, named Little Chalfont.

Overall, it is clear that adults aged between 18 and 64 were the major members of the library and children's fiction and adult fiction books accounted for the highest percentage of loans. In addition, the number of loans showed a steady rise with little fluctuations through the period.

In the library, half of people belonged to the age group of 18 to 64, which is 51%, followed by children with the figure 22%. Young adults and adults over age 65 and over were fewer users of library with only 15% and 12% respectively. In term of total loans by category, adult fiction and children's fiction books comprised of the highest loan, at 38%, followed by adult non fiction and children's non fiction at 13% and 6% respectively. Other categories including young adults, adult audio books and children's DVDs made up the least loan, with all together 5%.

In 2007, the total number of loans was approximately 16,000, which increased gradually within a year reaching around 19,000 and continued to remain same until 2009. In 2010, loan started rising and reached around 21,000 and this figure plateaued for 2012, before declining at around 19,000 in 2013. However, loan started increasing steadily peaking around 22,000 by 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response effectively covers all parts of the task. You have successfully identified the main features of the charts, including the age demographics, loan categories, and the trend over time. The comparisons are relevant, such as noting the dominance of the 18-64 age group and the specific breakdown of book categories. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the data. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with absolute precision; for instance, the '5%' figure for the least popular categories is a good synthesis, but ensure the distinction between categories is always clear.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific chart, which helps the reader follow the information easily. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'followed by', and 'however' to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall coherence of the report. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is always smooth; some sentences, such as the description of the 2010-2013 trend, could benefit from more varied linking phrases to avoid a slightly mechanical feel.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuations', 'plateaued', and 'comprised of' correctly. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'made up the least loan' (should be 'accounted for the smallest proportion of loans') and 'fewer users of library' (should be 'fewer library users'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise academic collocations would elevate the response. The range is functional but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'comprised of the highest loan' (should be 'comprised the highest proportion of loans') and 'loan started rising' (missing an article: 'the number of loans started to rise'). Additionally, 'remained same' should be 'remained the same'. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences would help improve your score in this criterion.
