Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given charts provide information about a public library in a town, named Little Chalfont.

Overall, it is clear that adults aged between 18 and 64 were the major members of the library and children's fiction and adult fiction books accounted for the highest percentage of loans. In addition, the number of loans showed a steady rise with minor fluctuations throughout the period.

In the library, half of people belonged to the age group of 18 to 64, which is 51%, followed by children with the figure 22%. Young adults and adults over age 65 were fewer users of library with only 15% and 12% respectively. In terms of total loans by category, adult fiction and children's fiction books comprised the highest loan, at 38%, followed by adult non fiction and children's non fiction at 13% and 6% respectively. Other categories including young adults, adult audio books and children's DVDs made up the least loan, with all together 5%.

In 2007, the total number of loans was approximately 16,000, which increased gradually within a year reaching around 19,000 and continued to remain the same until 2009. In 2010, the loan started rising and reached around 21,000 and this figure plateaued until 2012, before declining at around 19,000 in 2013. However, loans started increasing steadily peaking around 22,000 by 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the charts, including the age demographics, loan categories, and the trend over time. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the data. You have made relevant comparisons, such as contrasting the dominant age group with the minority groups and highlighting the most popular book categories. However, the report could be improved by ensuring all data points are clearly linked to the specific charts provided. For instance, the transition between the age demographics and the loan categories is logical, but the final paragraph on trends could be more tightly integrated with the overall summary of the library's performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized into three distinct paragraphs: an introduction/overview, a breakdown of demographics and categories, and a chronological analysis of trends. The progression of ideas is clear, and you use a range of cohesive devices such as 'in addition', 'followed by', and 'however' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different aspects of the data. To reach a higher band, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, ensure that the connection between the 'total loans' and the specific years is explicitly stated to avoid any ambiguity for the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'accounted for the highest percentage', 'steady rise', and 'plateaued' are well-chosen and appropriate for an academic report. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'fewer users of library' (should be 'fewer library users') and 'made up the least loan' (should be 'accounted for the smallest proportion of loans'). These errors do not impede communication, but refining these collocations would enhance the professional tone of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which allows for easy reading. There are occasional grammatical slips, such as 'the number of loans showed a steady rise with minor fluctuations' (which is good) but also 'Young adults and adults over age 65 were fewer users of library' (missing an article). Additionally, 'all together 5%' is slightly awkward phrasing. Despite these minor inaccuracies, your control over complex structures is generally good, and your punctuation is accurate throughout the text.
