Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided chart gives us the information about the age of readers visiting library, total books of different categories carried by the readers in the year 2016 and total number of loans from the year 2007 to 2016.

In the year 2016, 22% of readers in the library were children. Majority of readers fall in the category of adults having age between 18 to 64 with 51% contribution. In addition to that, small contribution includes young adults and adults with age more than 65 with 12% and 15% respectively. Children and adult fiction books had a heavier weightage in terms of borrowing books with 38% each. Adult non-fiction books had 13% contribution in borrowing books. Other category like children non-fiction, DVDs, young adults and adult audio books had all played a tiny role in contributing in the list of books borrowed.

The graph shows that the highest number of books were borrowed in the year 2016 with 22,000 in numbers. However, the least number of books borrowed was in the year 2007 with only 16,000 in numbers. In other year there was only a slight variation in the amount of books borrowed with the average of 19,000 books each year.

To conclude, adults with age from 18 to 64 has a highest contribution in the library with the priority to read children and adult fiction books.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all three charts provided in the prompt. You successfully identified the main features, such as the age distribution of readers and the peak borrowing year. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons between categories rather than just listing percentages. For instance, noting that fiction books were significantly more popular than non-fiction would strengthen the report. While you mentioned the 'tiny role' of other categories, grouping them more effectively would provide a clearer overview. Overall, you have addressed the requirements of the task well, providing a clear summary of the data presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into three paragraphs: one for the age/category data, one for the trend over time, and a concluding summary. The progression of ideas is generally clear. You use some cohesive devices like 'In addition to that' and 'However' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the connection between the final summary and the body paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally accurate, though some sentences could be better connected to improve the flow of information between the different charts.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'contribution', 'variation', and 'category' correctly. However, there is some repetition of basic phrasing, such as 'contribution in borrowing books' and 'in numbers'. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise collocations and a wider variety of reporting verbs or nouns. For example, instead of 'heavier weightage', you could use 'accounted for the largest share'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several minor grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('in the year 2016', 'the age of readers') and awkward phrasing ('adults with age more than 65'). Subject-verb agreement is generally maintained, but the phrasing 'adults with age from 18 to 64 has a highest contribution' contains a subject-verb agreement error ('has' should be 'have'). Despite these errors, the grammar does not impede communication, and you show a reasonable level of control over sentence structure.
