The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The pie-chart illustraties the percentage distribution of library members from children all the way to adults over the age of 65 of Little Chalfont Library. The table represents the percentage of the loans, divided into several categories namely children and adult ones.
Overall, adults between the age of 18 and 64 make up for over half the members in the library at 51%. On the other side the most loaned category of books are Children's fiction and Adult fiction both sharing the spot at 38% each. Over the years, the total number of loans has seen a steady growth from a little over 15,000 in 2007 all the way to around 22,000 in 2016.
For the library demographic, elderly people over 65 make up around 12% and teens amount to 15% of the total members, meanwhile the children make up a total of 22%.
Comparing the categories for the percentage of books loaned, it is evident that the children/young adults categories add up to a 47% of the loans. Adult categories take up the majority, coming at 53% of the total loans.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features of both the pie chart and the table. You successfully highlighted the demographic breakdown and the trend in book loans over time. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the data sets. For instance, you mention the percentage of adult members and the percentage of adult book loans, but you could explicitly link these to show if usage correlates with the demographic size. The overview is clear, but ensure that all data points are accurately represented; for example, the distinction between 'children's fiction' and 'adult fiction' is well-noted, but ensure the data interpretation remains precise throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'On the other side', and 'meanwhile' to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the demographic data from the loan statistics. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother; some sentences feel slightly disjointed. Additionally, ensure that referencing is always clear—for example, when you mention 'the children/young adults categories', ensure the reader can easily map this back to the specific data provided in the table.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'percentage distribution', 'demographic', and 'steady growth'. There are some minor errors, such as 'illustraties' (spelling) and 'make up for' (unnecessary preposition). You attempt to use some less common vocabulary, which is good, but there is room for more precision. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. For example, instead of saying 'make up', you could use 'account for' or 'constitute' to add variety to your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'children and adult ones' (which is slightly informal) and 'add up to a 47% of the loans' (the article 'a' is unnecessary here). Your control of punctuation is generally good, and these errors do not impede communication. To aim for a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as passive voice or relative clauses, to describe the data more fluently.
