Student answer (Band 7.0)

The charts show the various ages of members who visit the library, total loans based on the categories of books in a specific year and finally the distribution of total number of loans over a ten year time period.

Out of all library members, adults between the ages of eighteen and sixty four account for just more than half of all members. Young adults between the ages of thirteen and seventeen and senior citizens over the age of sixty four account for twelve and fifteen percent of the members respectively showing an almost near split. The remaining members, slightly less than one-fourth of the total are made up of children under the age of eighteen.

In the loans for the year 2016, Fiction dominates the charts - children's and adult fiction both having 38 percent each. Non fiction comes in second - with children's accounting for 6 percent and adult for 13 percent. Young adults and adult audio books hold a minute 2 percent each and the smallest category is that of Children's DVDs which contributes only 1 percent.

The total number of loans from the year 2007 upto 2016 has shown an almost constant increase every year. 2007 had the least with slightly over 15,000 and 2016 had the peak with approximately 22,000. 2008 and 2009 had an equal number of about 19,000. 2010 and 2011 both went above 20,000. 2012 and 2013 are the only two years where a dip can be observed, 2013 was the only year after 2010 where the loans fell under 20,000. 2014 and 2015 both had a steady increase.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified and reported the main features of all three charts. The overview is clear, and you have made relevant comparisons, such as noting the dominance of fiction in the 2016 loans and the general upward trend over the decade. However, there is a minor inaccuracy in your interpretation of the age groups: you stated children under eighteen make up one-fourth, but the chart shows children (0-12) at 24% and young adults (13-17) at 12%, which is more than one-fourth. Additionally, the description of the 2012-2013 dip is slightly confusing as the data shows a steady increase from 2013 to 2016. Despite these minor data interpretation slips, you have covered all parts of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific chart. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the demographic data to the 2016 loan categories and finally the ten-year trend. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Out of all library members,' 'In the loans for the year 2016,' and 'The total number of loans.' Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct data sets. To reach a higher band, ensure that transitions between sentences are slightly more varied to avoid a somewhat mechanical feel in the reporting of figures.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'account for,' 'dominates the charts,' and 'minute 2 percent' are used effectively. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some phrasing is slightly repetitive. You occasionally rely on simple descriptors; incorporating more varied synonyms for 'increase' or 'decrease' would enhance the sophistication of your writing. Overall, the vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for an academic report, and there are no spelling errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally good. There are occasional minor slips, such as 'almost near split' (which is redundant) and 'upto' (which should be two words: 'up to'). While you have demonstrated the ability to use complex structures, increasing the variety of subordinate clauses would help showcase a wider grammatical range. The errors present are non-systematic and do not cause any difficulty for the reader.
