Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given illustrations provide data on the age of library members, total loans by category in the year 2016 ,and the total number of loans between 2007 and 2016 of a library, which is located in Little Chalfont.

Overall, the majority of the members are between the age of 18 and 64. Moreover, fiction books are more common among both adults and children. The total number of loans saw a mixed trend, where in some years it increased and in others it decreased.

The highest number of members in the library was above the age of 18, there were 73 of them. There were 22 children below the age of 13 who were the active members, while only 15 were young adults. The table shows that 38% of the books being borrowed were in children or adult fiction category, due to which these categories were most popular in 2016. On the other hand, people showed the least interest to loan the children's dvds. This genre made up only 1% of the total books being loaned in 2016.

The least number of almost 16000 books were loaned out in the year 2007, whereas the highest quantity of around 22000 books were borrowed by people in 2016. In the years 2008 and 2009, 19000 books were assigned to the members. Furthermore, this number kept on seeing fluctuations between the years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of all three charts. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with relevant data from the visuals. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons. For instance, when discussing the age of members, you could have explicitly contrasted the dominant adult group with the minority of young adults. Additionally, the description of the loan trends is a bit repetitive; instead of listing individual years, you could focus more on the overall trajectory and the significant peaks and troughs. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific data sets. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the age data and the book categories in the second paragraph is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different types of information, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuations', 'category', and 'genre' correctly. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'people showed the least interest to loan the children's dvds' (should be 'in borrowing' or 'in checking out'). Additionally, 'assigned to the members' is not the most natural collocation for library books; 'borrowed by' or 'circulated to' would be more precise. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication or variety of less common lexical items required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to understand. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the least number of almost 16000 books', which is slightly awkward phrasing, and 'the total number of loans saw a mixed trend, where in some years it increased and in others it decreased'. Punctuation is generally accurate, though there is a missing space after the comma in the first sentence. The errors present do not impede communication, but more variety in complex structures would improve the score.
