IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given illustrations provide data on the age of library members, total loans by category in the year 2016, and the total number of loans between 2007 and 2016 of a library, which is located in Little Chalfont.
Overall, the majority of the members are between the age of 18 and 64. Moreover, fiction books are more common among both adults and children. The total number of loans saw a mixed trend, where in some years it increased and in others it decreased.
The highest number of members in the library was above the age of 18, there were 73 of them. There were 22 children below the age of 13 who were the active members, while only 15 were young adults. The table shows that 38% of the books being borrowed were in the children or adult fiction category, due to which these categories were most popular in 2016. On the other hand, people showed the least interest to loan the children's dvds. This genre made up only 1% of the total books being loaned in 2016.
The least number of almost 16000 books were loaned out in the year 2007, whereas the highest quantity of around 22000 books were borrowed by people in 2016. In the years 2008 and 2009, 19000 books were assigned to the members. Furthermore, this number kept on seeing fluctuations between the years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all three charts provided in the prompt. You successfully identify the main features, such as the age distribution of members, the popularity of fiction categories, and the overall trend in book loans. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons. For instance, when discussing the age of members, you could explicitly contrast the high number of adult members with the significantly lower number of young adults. Additionally, the description of the loan trend is slightly vague; mentioning specific years where the trend reversed would provide a more precise summary. Overall, the information is accurate and relevant to the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on different data sets. The progression of ideas is generally smooth. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore' to link sentences effectively. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more sophisticated. For example, in the final paragraph, the phrase 'this number kept on seeing fluctuations' is a bit repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the overall flow and coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrations', 'fluctuations', and 'category' appropriately. There are some instances where word choice could be more precise; for example, 'people showed the least interest to loan' is slightly awkward, as 'borrow' is the more standard term for library books. Additionally, 'assigned to the members' is not the most natural collocation for library loans. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more topic-specific collocations related to data description would help elevate your score to a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and easy to follow, and errors are infrequent. You demonstrate good control over basic grammar, though there are minor slips, such as 'The least number of almost 16000 books were loaned out', where 'The lowest number' would be more accurate. Additionally, the phrasing 'due to which these categories were most popular' is slightly clunky. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as passive voice or relative clauses, with greater precision to ensure that your writing remains error-free throughout.
