Student answer (Band 6.5)

The charts illustrate three differnent types of information- member's age, total loans by category, and total number of loans, about a public library in Little Chalfont between the year 2007 and 2016.

Overall, it is evident that adults in the age group of 18-64 constituted the largest portion of the total members, and adults over 65 and over accounted for the least. As for loans by category, children's fiction and adult fiction represented the highest proportion and chidren's DVDs and adult audio books required the least. Moreover, throughout the period, there was a stable increase in terms of total loans.

The age distribution of the members showed that adults 18-64 group accounted for more than half of the total population, making it the largest among other categories, at 51%. This figure is followed by children, at 22%. The porportion of adults 65 and over and young adults 13-17 was pretty close, at 12% and 15% respectively.

For total loans by category, fiction, both for children and adult, acounted for nearly four-fifths of the total amount, at 78%. The other sections required very little proportion, ranging between 13% to 1%.

Furthermore, in terms of total loans, a steady increase was noticed untill 2011, from 16,000 to 22,000. The amount then fell marginally in 2013 before it bounced back to around 22,500 in 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all three charts effectively. You have identified the main features, such as the dominance of the 18-64 age group and the high proportion of fiction loans. Comparisons are made throughout, particularly when contrasting the age groups and loan categories. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant trends. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for instance, you mentioned 'children's DVDs and adult audio books required the least', but the chart shows 'Children's DVDs' and 'Adult Audio' as separate categories. Overall, the task is well-addressed with a clear focus on the key information provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific chart or aspect of the data. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the overview and then to the detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'This figure is followed by' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information flows smoothly. The structure is coherent, and the reader can easily follow the comparison of the data sets.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision, using terms like 'constituted', 'accounted for', 'proportion', and 'marginally'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'differnent', 'porportion', 'acounted', and 'untill', which are noticeable but do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increase' or 'decrease' to avoid repetition. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, reducing these minor slips would help in achieving a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is generally good control over grammar, and the meaning is always clear. However, there are some minor errors in punctuation and article usage, such as 'member's age' (should be plural 'members' age') and 'the 18-64 age group'. Additionally, 'the age group of 18-64 constituted' is a solid complex structure. While there are occasional errors, they do not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement will further strengthen this criterion.
