Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie chart, bar chart and the table illustrates the age range of people who use the little chalfont library, the categories of books loaned and the total number of loans spanning from 2007 to 2016.

Overall, adults 18 to 64 years of age used the library the most, and those that were 65 years and over used the library the least. However, books on adult and children fiction were mostly borrowed whereas the largest number of loans were in the year 2016.

From the information provided, 51% of library users were adults 18 to 64years of age accounting for the most used, this was followed by children at 22%. However, a marginal 15% and 12% accounted for young adults 13 to 17 years of age and adults 65 years and over respectively.

Furthermore, books on children and adult fictions were mostly borrowed accounting for 38%. This was followed by adult non-fiction books accounting for 13%. Whereas the least loaned were books on adult audio and children’s dvds at 2% and 1% respectively. However, in 2011 and 2016, the library saw the most loans of about 20,000 to 21,000 whereas the least loaned was in 2007 amounting to approximately 16,000 of loans.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all parts of the task by summarizing the three charts provided. You successfully identified the main features, such as the dominant age group (18-64) and the peak loan years. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the data sets. For instance, you mention the age groups and book categories separately; linking these or noting the overall trends more clearly would enhance the response. The overview is clear, but some data points, such as the specific percentages, are presented as a list rather than a synthesis of the most significant trends. Overall, the response is well-focused and addresses the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'This was followed by' to link ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. For example, the shift between the age demographics and the book categories could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different data sets, which helps the reader follow the information. Referencing is generally clear, though ensure that the connection between sentences remains tight to avoid a list-like feel when reporting data.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'demographics', 'accounting for', and 'marginal'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'books on adult and children fiction were mostly borrowed', which could be phrased more naturally as 'fiction books for adults and children were the most popular'. Additionally, 'the least loaned' is slightly awkward; 'the lowest number of loans' would be more precise. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but incorporating more varied and precise academic collocations would elevate the response to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'The pie chart, bar chart and the table illustrates' (subject-verb agreement: should be 'illustrate') and '18 to 64years' (missing space). You also have some punctuation issues, such as the lack of a comma after introductory phrases. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalization of proper nouns like 'Little Chalfont'. The use of complex structures is evident, but accuracy needs to be more consistent for a higher score.
