Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the charts, including the trend in total loans and the breakdown by age and category. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For instance, the statement that children and adult fiction was '38 times greater' than children's DVDs is mathematically incorrect based on the provided data, which suggests a misunderstanding of the chart's proportions. While the main trends are identified, the comparison between categories lacks precision, and the overview is slightly disjointed. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are interpreted accurately and that the overview provides a more cohesive summary of the most significant trends rather than just listing isolated figures.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'To begin with', and 'Additionally' are used to signal the progression of ideas. However, some transitions are mechanical, and the internal cohesion within sentences is occasionally weak, such as in the second paragraph where the transition between the trend and the age demographic is abrupt. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly in the final paragraph where the sentence structure becomes convoluted, making it difficult to track the relationship between the categories mentioned. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks sophistication. You use basic terms like 'great number' and 'less number', which are not precise in a statistical context. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'children and adult fiction were more taken loans'. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of variety and precision in describing trends (e.g., using 'showed a little decline' instead of 'experienced a slight decrease') limits the score. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and precise terminology for describing data trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'accounted for'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of information. Examples include 'the adults who are aged 18-64 are likely to visit the library children and adult fiction were more taken loans' (run-on/syntax error) and 'approximately to 21,000' (unnecessary preposition). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some missing commas and incorrect use of capitalization. While the meaning is usually understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and sentence boundary punctuation will significantly improve your accuracy.
