IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart compares the number of people who joined Little Chalfont library in four different age groups in 2016, whereas the table shows the proportion of loans took from seven different categories in the library. In addition, the bar chart illustrates the total number of loans over the period from 2007 to 2016.
Overall, adults were the most significant members in library, while children's, and adult fiction recorded the highest percentage of total loans. It is also noticeable that the total number of loans increased over the years with some fluctuations.
In terms of pie chart, almost half of the total members were adults, while the figure for young adults was only 15%. The figure for children (22%) was higher than elderly ( 12%). From table, it is clear that both children's and adult fiction categories recorded the highest percentage of loans, and the figure was 38%. In contrast, the figure for children's DVD, and adult audio books were, at only 1% and 2%, respectively.
According to the bar chart, the total number of loans was above 15,000, in 2007, and this figure rose dramatically to over 20,000 over the four years. For the following two years, this figure declined to approximately 19,000. Meanwhile, the total number of loans again rose over the period from 2013 to 2016, and the figure was around 23,000, in 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response effectively covers all three charts, identifying key features and making relevant comparisons. You successfully highlighted the demographic breakdown, the most popular loan categories, and the overall trend in loan numbers. The overview is clear and captures the main trends well. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with complete accuracy; for instance, you mentioned the total loans were 'above 15,000' in 2007, but the chart shows it was closer to 16,000. Additionally, ensure that comparisons are consistently made, such as explicitly contrasting the high popularity of fiction with the low popularity of DVDs.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that address each chart separately. The use of cohesive devices such as 'In addition,' 'Overall,' 'In terms of,' and 'In contrast' helps guide the reader through the information. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For example, 'From table' is missing an article ('the table'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different data sets, which contributes to the overall readability of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly, using terms like 'proportion,' 'fluctuations,' 'dramatically,' and 'respectively.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'loans took' (should be 'loans taken') and 'most significant members' (which is slightly unnatural; 'largest group of members' would be better). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise academic collocations would elevate the response. The spelling is generally accurate throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are error-free, there are persistent minor errors, particularly with articles ('In terms of pie chart,' 'From table') and prepositions. Some punctuation errors occur, such as the unnecessary comma in 'children's, and adult fiction' and '23,000, in 2016.' Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammatical mistakes do not impede communication. To improve, focus on consistent article usage and refining punctuation around numerical data.
