Student answer (Band 5.5)

The pie chart depicts the age group of library members in 2016, while the tabular data illustrates the proportion of loan by various categories. The bar chart compares the total number of loans from 2007 to 2016 at Little Chalfont Library.

Overall, it clearly seems that, adults form age group 18 to 16 noted highest interest as library members, whereas young adult shows lowest interest. Consequently, the total number of loan increases from 2007 to 2016 demonstrate fluctuation trend.

According to the pie chart, adults which is of age group 18 to 64 accounted a half proportion of total library members, followed by children recorded 22%. Whereas, young adults and adults of 65 or over age noticed only 12% and 15% respectively.

Examining the tabular data, adult fiction as well as children's fiction was leading as loan category , which is 38%. While other categories witnessed lowest percentage.

Analyzing the bar chart, in 2007 around 16,000 subscribers were listed and its increases over the time. In 2011 and 2012, it recorded highest members, which is around 21,000, this similar trend is also observed in 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all three charts, providing a clear overview and selecting key features. However, there are inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, you state that adults aged 18-64 account for 'a half' of members, but the pie chart shows 50%. While accurate, the phrasing '18 to 16' is a clear error. Additionally, the description of the bar chart is somewhat vague; you mention 'around 16,000' and '21,000', which is acceptable, but the claim that 2016 shows a 'similar trend' to 2011/2012 is imprecise given the fluctuations. To improve, ensure data points are cited with greater precision and avoid contradictory or confusing age ranges.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs for each chart. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'According to the pie chart', 'Examining the tabular data', and 'Analyzing the bar chart', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Consequently, the total number of loan increases... demonstrate fluctuation trend'. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoother to achieve a higher band. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different data sources.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing for a basic description of trends and proportions. You use terms like 'proportion', 'fluctuation', and 'subscribers' correctly. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'noted highest interest' instead of 'showed the highest interest' and 'total number of loan' instead of 'total number of loans'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive, relying on basic structures to describe the data. Expanding your repertoire of reporting verbs and comparative adjectives would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'adults which is of age group' (should be 'who are in the age group'), 'accounted a half proportion' (should be 'accounted for half'), and 'which is 38%' (referring to two categories, so 'which are' or 'totaling' would be more accurate). Subject-verb agreement is occasionally inconsistent. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on article usage and pluralization will help improve accuracy.
