Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart gives the information about little chalfont library of the year 2016. The chart is divided into three sections. First, there's age of library members (2016) mentioned in pie-chart. Secondly, there is a table which provides the information about the total loans by category and lastly, there is a bar chart which demonstrates the total number of loans in the time period of eight years starting from 2007 till 2016. The x-axis of the bar graph shows the years while the y-axis of the graph shows the amount of loans received.

In 2016, majority of the library members were adults between the age group 18-64 years which makes up 51% of the total members, children constituted upto 22% however, young adults of 13-17 years and adults of 65 and above years made up to 15% and 12% respectively.

Most loans about 38% were granted to the two categories which were children's and adult fiction respectively. Second category which received loans was adult non-fiction about 13%. However, children's non fiction only received 6% loans. Subsequently, young adults, adult audio books and children's dvds collectively received upto a total of 5% loans.

Most loans were received in the years 2011 and 2015 which were 21,000. Interesting part is in each year the loans received were around 20,000. However, loans plummeted in the year 2007 and received only 16,000. 18,000 loans were granted in year 2008 and 2009. While, in 2010, 2012 and 2014 a total of 21,000 loans were received in each year respectively. At last, most loans were received in 2016 which were around 22,000 marking it a year which received more loans than any other year.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of all three charts. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with relevant data. However, the analysis of the table is slightly confusing; you state that '38% were granted to the two categories' (children's and adult fiction), but the table shows these as separate categories (20% and 18%). Additionally, your description of the bar chart trends is a bit repetitive, listing individual years rather than grouping them to highlight the overall upward trend. To reach a higher band, ensure data is grouped logically and avoid listing every single year, focusing instead on the most significant changes and comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific chart. You use some cohesive devices such as 'First', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'Subsequently' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the third paragraph where the grouping of categories is unclear. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using more varied linking phrases to connect the data points more fluidly rather than just listing them.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'plummeted', 'constituted', and 'collectively'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'amount of loans' (number of loans is more accurate for countable items) and 'most loans about 38% were granted to the two categories'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Expanding your repertoire of reporting verbs and comparative language would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as missing articles ('the age of library members', 'in year 2008') and minor punctuation errors. Some sentences are slightly awkward, for example, 'Interesting part is in each year the loans received were around 20,000'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on consistent article usage and refining sentence structure will help improve your accuracy.
