Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of both the table and the pie chart. However, the overview is weak; it merely describes the table rather than synthesising the key trends or significant comparisons across both data sets. The report is essentially a list of figures rather than an analytical summary. To improve, you should group related data points (e.g., comparing the high popularity of fiction among adults and children) and provide a clear, concise summary of the most striking differences or similarities at the beginning of the report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'Moreover' are used at the start of almost every sentence, which disrupts the flow of the text. The referencing is sometimes unclear, such as 'In this table there are 7 categories', which does not effectively link to the data. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that sentences flow logically from one to the next would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. You rely heavily on basic terms like 'category', 'percentage', and 'highest/lowest'. While the meaning is clear, there is a lack of variety in how you describe the data. For example, instead of repeating 'is about' or 'is', you could use verbs like 'account for', 'constitute', 'represent', or 'stand at'. There is no attempt to use less common vocabulary or more precise collocations, which keeps the lexical range at a basic level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. For instance, 'The Initial category children's fiction is the highest percentage' is grammatically awkward; it should be 'The category of children's fiction accounts for the highest percentage'. There are also issues with sentence fragments, such as 'Which is divided into 4 categories', which should be joined to the previous sentence. Punctuation is inconsistent, particularly with the use of capital letters and commas.
