Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all three charts provided, identifying key features such as the dominant age group (18-64) and the overall trend in loans. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical and lacks a cohesive synthesis of the data. For instance, the description of the loan categories is fragmented and difficult to follow due to unclear phrasing (e.g., 'nearly its half percentage was taken by children's non-fiction'). While the main features are highlighted, the comparison between the categories could be more analytical rather than just listing percentages. The overview is present but could be more clearly integrated to provide a better summary of the trends.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader navigate the different charts. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'In detail' and 'In line graph' are used to transition, but the internal flow within paragraphs is frequently disrupted by awkward sentence structures and unclear referencing. The logical progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by the way data points are presented, making it difficult to follow the comparison between the different years and categories. More varied and precise linking words are needed to improve the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'total loans was taken' instead of 'total loans were recorded' and 'loan rate slightly increased'. The range of vocabulary is limited, and the student relies on repetitive phrasing. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of sophisticated or precise terminology (e.g., using 'fluctuated' correctly but failing to describe the specific nature of the changes) limits the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's understanding. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'total loans was taken'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'at 2016' instead of 'in 2016'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma placement. While the student attempts to use complex sentences, these are often where the most significant errors occur, reducing the overall accuracy of the writing.
