IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart represents the age group of the library members in 2016. The highest number of members (51%) are the adults of the age group from 18 to 64, while Children and young adults are (22% and 15%) respectively, the lowest share of members (12%) is held by adults of the age of 65 or over.

The bar chart shows the total number of loans taken from 2007 to 2016. Though there was a little dip in loans from [redacted phone], overall the amount of loans has increased from 2007 to 2016. Starting from 2007 where there were just little over 15,000 loans, now has grown over 20,000 loans in 2016, the highest among all the years.

On the other hand, the table shows loans taken by categories in 2016. The highest amount (38%) of loans had been taken for the fiction section of both children and adults. Consequently, loan taken for both adult audio books and Young adults was 2% each just after children DVDs which was lowest at 1%. Non-fiction books for both adults and children were in the mid range of 13% and 6% respectively.

There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'loan taken for' instead of 'the number of loans taken for' or 'the amount of loans' (loans are countable, so 'number' is preferred). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'accounted for'.
