IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

 

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The charts illustrate the information based on three categories such as age of library members, total loans by category, and total number of loans of Little Chalfont Library in a town.

It is clear that adults aged 18 to 64 made up the largest proportion of library members in 2016. In terms of loans, children's fiction and adult fiction were the most borrowed categories in the same year. Meanwhile, total number of loans showed an overall upward trend despite experiencing slight fluctuations between 2007 and 2016.

Nearly half of the members in the library were adults, hovering around 51% in 2016. The second most prominent members were children, which stood at about 22%. In contrast, the other two groups young adults and adults 65 and over were holding the lowest proportion around 15% and 12% respectively.

Turning to the total loans by category in 2016, children's fiction and adult fiction were the most popular options, which accounted for around 38% for both categories. Moreover, adult non-fiction and children's non-fiction held about 13% and 6% respectively. Thus, the least popular book categories that only had 1% or 2% were children's DVDs, young adults, and adult audio books. The total number of loans showed positive growth from 2007 to 2011 before suffering a downward trend between 2011 and 2013. Finally, it showed positive growth and reached about 22,000 loans in 2016.
