Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart, the table, and the bar chart provided data about the public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Overall, the adults showed the highest participation in visiting the library, while the number of loans was stabilized, and the largest proportion of loans were in the adult fiction and the children's fiction categories.

Firstly, the adults had the highest participation with 51%, while the children category accounted for 22%. The young adults and the adults (65 and over) categories had contributed 12% and 5%, respectively. Secondly, for loans shares, adult fiction and children fiction were stood at 38%, each. Adult non-fiction and children's non-fiction classes accounted for 13% and 6%, respectively. Children's DVDs and young adult categories had proportions of 2% and 1%, respectively.

Additionally, total loans jumped from around 15000 in 2007 to about 18000 in 2008. In 2009, all loans remained unchanged and stayed about 18000. The total loans rose in 2010 and climbed to 21000, while in 2011 loans showed slight growth and stood around 21000. The loans witnessed a slight decline and stayed at 19800. The loans faced slight growth with 21000 in 2014 as compared to around 22000 in 2015 and at the end of the period showed a figure of 22000.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the three charts and provided relevant comparisons. You covered the demographic breakdown, the loan categories, and the trend over time. However, the analysis of the bar chart is slightly cluttered with too many individual data points, which makes it harder to identify the overall trend. To improve, focus on grouping the years (e.g., 'the period saw a general upward trend, peaking at 22,000 in 2015') rather than listing every year's figure. This would allow for a more analytical summary rather than a descriptive list of numbers.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific chart. You used transition signals such as 'Overall', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Additionally' to guide the reader through the information. The progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between sentences within paragraphs is smoother; some sentences feel like a list of facts rather than a cohesive narrative. Overall, the structure is effective and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'accounted for', 'remained unchanged', and 'witnessed a slight decline' are appropriate for describing data. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'were stood at' (should be 'stood at') and 'categories had contributed' (should be 'categories contributed'). Expanding your range of synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' would further enhance your score. The vocabulary is generally precise enough to communicate the trends effectively without causing confusion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'were stood at' and 'the adults (65 and over) categories had contributed'. Additionally, there are some issues with article usage and verb tense consistency when describing the historical data. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of passive voice would help improve your accuracy.
