Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie chart, the table, and the bar chart provided data about the public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Overall, the adults showed the highest participation in visiting the library, while the number of loans witnessed fluctuations, and the largest proportion of loans were in the adult fiction and the children's fiction categories.

Firstly, the adults had the highest participation with 51%, while the children category accounted for 22%. The young adults and the adults (65 and over) categories had contributed 15% and 12%, respectively. Secondly, for loans shares, adult fiction, and children's fiction, they stood at 38% each. Adult non-fiction and children's non-fiction classes accounted for 13% and 6%, respectively. Children's DVDs and young adult categories had proportions of 1% and 2%, respectively.

Additionally, total loans jumped from around 15000 in 2007 to about 18000 in 2008. In 2009, all loans remained unchanged and stayed about 18000. The total loans rose in 2010 and climbed to 21000, while in 2011 loans showed slight growth and stood around 21000. The loans witnessed a slight decline and stayed at 19800. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of all three charts. The overview provides a clear summary of the key trends and proportions, which is essential for a high score. You have made relevant comparisons, such as noting the equal shares of adult and children's fiction. However, the description of the bar chart data is slightly repetitive and could be more concise. To improve, focus on grouping the years where the trend is similar rather than listing every single year individually. Overall, you have covered all parts of the task well and provided a clear, accurate report of the data provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You have used cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', and 'while' to connect your ideas effectively. The progression of information is easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different types of data (pie chart, table, and bar chart). To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between sentences is more varied, as some of the sentence structures feel slightly mechanical. Overall, the flow of information is clear and coherent throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the data, including terms like 'proportion', 'fluctuations', 'accounted for', and 'witnessed'. There is a good attempt to use varied reporting verbs. However, some word choices could be more precise; for example, 'classes' is not the most natural term for library loan categories—'genres' or 'categories' would be better. Additionally, some phrasing is slightly repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'showed' and 'stood at'. Expanding your range of synonyms for describing trends would enhance the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. There are minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrasing, such as 'the children category' instead of 'the children's category'. You also have some slightly awkward phrasing in the final paragraph, such as 'the loans faced slight growth and moved to 21000'. Despite these minor slips, your grammatical accuracy is generally strong, and your errors do not impede communication at all.
