Student answer (Band 6.0)

The supplied data set illustrate the data related to a library in a small city named Little Chalfont. It consists of a pie chart describing age of the library members, a table listing the loan taken by library and total amounts of loan taken over a decade.

Overall, the library's memberships are significantly occupied by adults and a huge amount of loans were spent on fictional books in 2016. Furthermore, the total number of loans increased from 2007 to 2016.

In 2016, the library had about 22 percent children member while adults which are 13-17 years old and those haing age 65 or above were over 10%. The remaining half memberships were occupied by adults of age between 18-64 years.

There was a steady annual increase starting from just over 15,000 in 2007 until 2010 when the total loans exceeded 20,000 whilst the number of loans remained almost same afterwards till 2016 with an only exception in 2013 when they were below this figure.

In 2016, 78% of the total loan was spent on fictional books equally for children and adults while 19% on non-fictional in which adult books took more than double of children's. Lastly, a very few numbers were spent on DVD's and audios.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the charts and provided a clear overview. You covered the age demographics, the trend in total loans over the decade, and the breakdown of loan types in 2016. However, some data points are slightly inaccurate or vague; for instance, stating 'the remaining half' for the 18-64 age group is a slight oversimplification of the visual data. Additionally, while you mention the 2016 loan breakdown, you could have made more direct comparisons between the categories to fully satisfy the 'make comparisons where relevant' requirement. Overall, the response is well-structured and covers all key aspects of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by chart type. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In 2016', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader through the data. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be tighter. For example, in the third paragraph, the phrase 'adults which are 13-17 years old' is confusingly phrased, as 13-17-year-olds are typically classified as teenagers rather than adults. Improving the flow between sentences would help elevate the coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'significantly occupied', 'steady annual increase', and 'exceeded'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'huge amount of loans were spent' is slightly unnatural; 'a large proportion of loans were for' would be more precise. Additionally, 'very few numbers were spent' is imprecise. Expanding your range to include more precise academic collocations related to data reporting would improve your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('data set illustrate', 'loans were spent on fictional books'), missing articles ('a very few numbers'), and awkward phrasing ('those haing age 65'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage will be beneficial.
