IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagrams below gives us a proper information about little chalfont library.

If we discuss about the age of library members in year 2016, their ratio is as following. The ratio of children are 22% which is greater then the ratio of adults above the age 65 that is 12%.And if we look upon young adults their ratio is less than 20%.The ratio of adults at the age between 18 to 64 are mostly library members, and their ratio is 51%.

After that if we discuss about total number of loans in year between 2007 to 2016 we will see that the graph demonstrate a proper increase and decrease of loans between these years. So in 2007 there is a loan of 16,000 that becomes greater in 2008 up to 17,000.In 2009 the loans remain the same as previous year.In 2010 loans leads to more than 20,000 and in the year 2011 their ratio is 22,000.In 2012 loans decrease only one percent as compare to year 2011.In year 2013 their was a gradual decrease of loans that are less than 20,000,but after that in year 2014,2015 their ratio increases again up to 20,000.And lastly in the year 2016 the amount of loans are greater than all the previous years tat is up to 24,000

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of both charts, including the age distribution of library members and the trend in loan numbers. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For example, the description of the loan trend is a list of data points rather than a synthesis of the overall trend. The student identifies the start and end points but fails to highlight the significant fluctuations or the overall upward trajectory effectively. The use of 'ratio' is inaccurate when referring to percentages of a total population, which impacts the clarity of the reporting. To reach a higher band, the student should group data more logically and focus on identifying key trends and significant comparisons rather than listing every year individually.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The transition between the two charts is abrupt, using 'After that if we discuss' which is informal and mechanical. Cohesive devices are limited and often misused, such as 'And if we look upon' and 'So in 2007'. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the flow between sentences feels disjointed. While the paragraphing is present, the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks the sophistication required for higher bands. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring a smoother transition between ideas would significantly enhance the coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive. The student frequently uses the word 'ratio' incorrectly to describe percentages, which is a significant lexical error. Phrases like 'give us a proper information' and 'if we discuss about' are unnatural and demonstrate a lack of control over academic register. There is little attempt to use less common vocabulary or precise terminology related to data description (e.g., 'fluctuation', 'peak', 'decline', 'proportion'). The range is sufficient to convey the basic meaning, but the lack of precision and the reliance on simple, sometimes inaccurate, word choices limits the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement ('The diagrams below gives', 'The ratio of children are') and preposition usage ('greater then' instead of 'greater than', 'as compare to' instead of 'compared to'). Punctuation is also problematic, with missing spaces after periods and incorrect comma usage. While the meaning is generally clear despite these errors, the frequency of grammatical slips prevents the response from reaching a higher band. More attention to basic grammar rules and sentence construction is necessary.
