IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The illustrated charts include one pie chart, one table and one bar graph each of these diagrams illustrate different information about the little Chalfont library. The pie chart illustrates the proportions of members in this library based on their ages in 2016, the table compares the percentages of loans across different categories in this library in the year 2016 and the bar graph shows the total number of loans from 2007 to 2016. Overall, one of the most prominent features when looking at the data is that majority of it's members were adults (18-64 years). In addition, except for the first year this library had 20,000 loans annually; especially in the year 2016, most of the loans were for children's and adult fiction books.
To begin with, the proportion in the year 2016 majority of the members of the library were adults aged whose age ranged from 18 to 64 and they compromised of more than half - 51% to be exact of the total number. The percentage of child members in this library was only 22% which is less than half of the previously
mentioned figures. Furthermore, the remaining 27% of the proportion was compromised of 15% young adults (13-17 years old) and 12% adults aged 65 and above made up 12% of the proportion.
Secondly, moving on to the total number of loans in this libary in the year 2007 it had slightly more than 15,000 which rose to slightly more than 20,000 by the year 2010. After which it fluctuated slightly and eventually in the year 2016 it reached 23,000. Out of the mentioned number of loans 76% were for children's fiction and adult fiction (i.e. 38% for children fiction and 38% for adult fiction). Followed by 13% for adult non-fiction, 6% children non-fiction and another 2% adult audio books, 2% young adult books and 1% children DVD's.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the charts and provided a clear overview. You included data from all three sources—the pie chart, table, and bar graph—and made relevant comparisons, such as noting that adult fiction and children's fiction accounted for the majority of loans. However, the response could be improved by ensuring the data is presented more accurately. For instance, you mentioned that the library had 20,000 loans annually except for the first year, but the bar graph shows fluctuations throughout the period. Additionally, ensure that all figures are transcribed precisely to avoid minor inaccuracies in reporting.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a summary. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'Furthermore,' and 'Secondly' to guide the reader through the information. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the phrase 'previously mentioned figures' which feels a bit clunky. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the demographic data from the loan statistics, which helps the reader follow the progression of your argument. Overall, the flow is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'prominent features,' 'proportions,' and 'fluctuated' are used appropriately. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'compromised of' (should be 'comprised of' or 'composed of') and 'children's and adult fiction books' (which is acceptable but could be more precise). While you attempt to use a variety of terms, some phrasing is slightly repetitive. Expanding your range of synonyms for 'increase' or 'decrease' would further enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'majority of it's members' (should be 'its') and 'children's and adult fiction' (missing the possessive apostrophe on 'children'). Additionally, some sentences are slightly run-on or lack necessary punctuation, which occasionally affects the flow. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and consistent use of articles.
