The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The 3 charts illustrate the data provided about a library used by the citizens of Little Chalfont. Overall, the most common age range of library members is 18-64, and the most popular loan categories were children's fiction and adult fiction in 2016. In addition, the total number of loans in that year was the highest compared to all previous years.

Firstly, the pie chart shows the number of library members in different age groups; almost half are adults aged 18-64, followed by the second most common group, children (22). The other two categories are smaller: adults aged 65 and over, and the least popular one is young adults aged 13-17. Moreover, the table demonstrates the prevalence of book borrowing groups in 2016. Children's fiction and adult fiction were loaned the most (38%), while children's DVDs were loaned the least, at 1%.

The third bar chart that is provided demonstrates the total number of items that were loaned from 2007 to 2016. A fluctuation can be observed; in 2007, almost 15,000 loans were made, and by 2008 and 2009 they rose to a little less than 20,000. In 2010 and 2011, the number increased further. After reaching a peak of 21,000 in 2011, the number of loans started falling in the following years before it began to rise again in 2014. A steady incline was noticed in 2015 ( 21,000) and finally in 2016, over 21,000, which was the highest number.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main features of all three charts and provided relevant comparisons. The overview clearly highlights the key trends, such as the dominant age group and the peak in loan numbers. You have supported your points with specific data from the charts, such as the 38% figure for fiction loans and the peak of 21,000 in 2011. The response covers all parts of the task well, and the information is accurately reported. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are fully integrated; for instance, you could explicitly contrast the popularity of children's fiction with the significantly lower figures for other categories beyond just mentioning the lowest.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each chart, and a concluding summary of trends. You use a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In addition', 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'After reaching a peak'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different data sets, which helps the reader follow your analysis. The progression of ideas is smooth, and referencing is clear throughout the text. The structure is coherent, and the use of linking words is generally natural and contributes to the overall flow of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'prevalence of book borrowing', 'fluctuation can be observed', and 'steady incline' are used effectively. There is an awareness of style appropriate for an academic report. While the vocabulary is accurate, it remains somewhat functional. To achieve a higher score, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to describe trends, such as 'marginal increase', 'pronounced decline', or 'accounted for a significant proportion'. Overall, the lexical range is adequate and supports clear communication without errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with good control. Most sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is generally accurate. For example, you correctly use commas to separate clauses and parentheses for data. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. To improve further, try to vary your sentence structure even more by using passive voice constructions or more complex subordinating clauses to describe the data trends. The current level of accuracy is high, and the grammatical control is consistent throughout the response.
