The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The charts provide information about the members and loan activity of Little Chalfont Library. They show the age distribution of members, the types of materials borrowed in 2016, and the total number of loans between 2007 and 2016.
Overall, adults aged 18–64 made up the largest proportion of library members, while young adults represented the smallest group. In terms of loans, adult and children’s fiction were the most popular categories. The total number of loans generally increased over the ten-year period, despite some fluctuations.
In 2016, adults aged 18–64 accounted for 51% of library members. Children were the second-largest group at 22%, followed by young adults aged 13–17 at 15%. Adults aged 65 and over made up the remaining 12%. Regarding loan categories, children’s fiction and adult fiction were equally popular, both accounting for 38% of total loans. Adult non-fiction represented 13%, while children’s non-fiction made up 6%. Young adult books and adult audio books each accounted for 2%, and children’s DVDs were the least popular category at just 1%.
The total number of loans was approximately 16,000 in 2007. It then increased to around 19,000 in 2008 and 2009, before reaching about 20,500 in 2010 and 21,000 in 2011. The figure fell slightly in 2012 and 2013, but then rose steadily to approximately 21,500 in 2016, which was the highest level during the period.
