Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie and table charts illustrate composition of members and borrowed books category in year 2016. Moreover, the bar compares time period between 2007 to 2016 regarding amount of loan taken by library of Little Chalfont.

Overall, it is clearly seen that mostly the library were used by adult from 18 to 64 age group. The faculty took significant amount of loan each year, as it mostly consisted of adult's and children's fiction.

The half proportion membership of library consisted of 18 to 64 adults, whereas it higher than that of children by 29%. Young adults 13 - 17 and adults above 64 showed identical figure, at 15% and 12% respectively.

The maximum borrowed item represented adult and children's fiction, at 38%, followed by adult's non fiction which twofold more than children's non fiction. The remaining category accounted for the significantly lower proportion with just only 1 to 2%.

Furthermore, throughout the period sum of money rented was above 15000. The amount increased gradually from 2007 to 2013, reaching above 20000, only for three year (2010, 2011, 2012). Then dropping to a slight below 20000 in 2013, afterwards recovering to its initial amount and rose to 23000 at the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the charts and provided relevant comparisons. You covered the membership composition, the categories of borrowed books, and the trends in loan numbers over time. However, the analysis could be improved by ensuring data accuracy; for instance, you mentioned 'adults above 64' were 12%, but the chart indicates 15%. Additionally, the description of the loan trends is slightly confusing in the final paragraph regarding the specific years. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are cited precisely and that the overview clearly synthesises the most significant trends across all three charts rather than just listing them.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organised into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific chart. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Overall', and 'Furthermore' to signal transitions between ideas. However, some of the linking is a bit mechanical, and the progression within the final paragraph is slightly disjointed due to the phrasing of the trend description. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoother to improve the overall readability. Using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring they are used naturally would help elevate this score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'composition', 'proportion', and 'gradually'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'sum of money rented' (which is incorrect as the chart refers to the number of loans, not money) and 'amount of loan taken'. These errors occasionally make the meaning slightly unclear. To improve, focus on using more precise terminology related to data description and ensure that your word choices are contextually appropriate for an academic report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'mostly the library were used' (subject-verb agreement), 'adult's and children's fiction' (unnecessary apostrophes), and 'a slight below' (article usage). While these errors are noticeable, they do not significantly impede communication. To achieve a higher band, you should aim for more error-free sentences and pay closer attention to articles, pluralisation, and subject-verb agreement. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will also be beneficial.
