Student answer (Band 7.0)

The charts provide information about a public library in the town of Little Chalfont, including the age profile of its users, the types of books borrowed, and the number of visits made to the library between 1998 and 2009.

Overall, the library experienced a significant increase in the number of visits during the period shown. Fiction was the most popular type of book borrowed, while books for children accounted for a smaller proportion. In terms of age, adults made up the largest group of library users.

The number of library visits rose considerably from approximately 12,000 in 1998 to around 18,000 in 2003. This figure then increased further, reaching about 20,000 in 2009. Thus, despite some fluctuations, the general trend was upward.

Regarding the types of books borrowed, fiction accounted for the largest share, at roughly half of all loans. Non-fiction was also popular, although its proportion was considerably lower. Books for children represented the smallest category. The age distribution shows that adults were the main users of the library, whereas younger people made up a smaller percentage.

Overall, the charts indicate that the Little Chalfont library became increasingly popular over the period, with fiction being the dominant type of book borrowed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively covers all parts of the task. You have successfully identified the main features of the charts, including the upward trend in library visits and the breakdown of book types and age demographics. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the data. You have made relevant comparisons, such as noting that fiction was the most popular category and that adults were the primary users. The data is accurately reported, and the inclusion of specific figures helps to support your points. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are fully integrated into the analysis rather than just listing them, though your current approach is already quite strong.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from an introduction and overview to specific details about visits and then to book types and demographics. Cohesive devices such as 'In terms of', 'Regarding', and 'whereas' are used effectively to link ideas and create a smooth flow. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information is presented in a way that is easy to follow. The transition between the general overview and the detailed body paragraphs is seamless, contributing to a coherent and well-structured response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases such as 'significant increase', 'accounted for a smaller proportion', and 'general trend was upward' are used appropriately. You avoid repetition and use a variety of terms to describe the data. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common lexical items related to data analysis (e.g., 'predominant', 'marginal', 'fluctuated significantly') could further enhance the lexical range. Overall, the language is natural and error-free in terms of word choice and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response displays a good command of grammatical structures. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as 'The number of library visits rose considerably from approximately 12,000 in 1998 to around 18,000 in 2003.' Punctuation is accurate throughout, and there are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, showing good control over tense and subject-verb agreement. To aim for a higher band, you could experiment with more varied complex sentence structures, such as using participle clauses or passive voice constructions to report the data.
