IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The above pie chart gives information about the Little Chalfont Library.

We can notice that the adults are the maximum number (51) of members in library followed by children (22) and the adults above the age of 65 are the minimum followed by young adults which are second least.

There is also a graph given which tells how much loan is taken in which year, from this we can notice that in the year 2016 the maximum and year 2007 the minimum loan was taken, the timeline of 2008 to 2009 were same whereas from 2010 to 2012 were also same and we can notice the slight increase from year 2013 to 2015.

We can also see that a table is given with a heading of toatal loans by category (2016). In this table the children's fiction and the Adult fiction is maximum (38%) and the children's DVDs are the minimum (1%).

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers all three visual elements provided, but the analysis is superficial. While you identify the maximum and minimum values, you fail to provide a clear overview or synthesize the data effectively. For example, stating that '2008 to 2009 were same' is a mechanical description rather than a meaningful comparison. To reach a higher band, you should group information logically and highlight significant trends or relationships between the categories rather than simply listing figures. The report lacks a clear summary statement that captures the main features of the library's usage.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is disjointed. You rely on simple, repetitive transitions such as 'We can notice that' and 'There is also a graph'. The use of cohesive devices is limited and mechanical, which makes the flow of information feel somewhat stilted. To improve, you should use a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your sentences and ideas more naturally, ensuring that the transition between the pie chart, the line graph, and the table is smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive. You frequently use words like 'maximum', 'minimum', and 'same' to describe the data. There is little attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary or precise terminology related to data analysis (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', 'accounted for', 'constituted'). While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of variety in your word choice limits your ability to describe the trends with precision. Expanding your range of descriptive verbs and nouns will significantly enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. For instance, 'the adults are the maximum number' is awkward phrasing, and 'toatal loans' contains a spelling error. There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases, such as 'in the year 2016 the maximum and year 2007 the minimum loan was taken'. These errors are noticeable, though they do not completely impede communication. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and more accurate sentence construction will help improve your accuracy.
