IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The charts demonstrate the data about a public library known as Little Chalfont. There are three charts providing the whole information about the age of library members, loans by category and total number or loans for the year 2016.
Overall, The pie-chart illustrates the age of library members back in 2016, where most members were adults aged 18-64. In addition, there is a table showing total loans with their category for the year 2016, although children's percentage as members was not huge, they still contributed to 38% of loan. There is a bar graph showing ups and downs in the total number of loans, there was a huge amount of loan in year 2016.
Subsequently, the pie chart is showing the age of the library members, where adults aged 18-64 covered a large part of 51%. Young adults aged 13-17 were covering 15 percent of the total number of members, whereas children and people over 65 had covered 22% and 12% of total number.
Conversely, the table and the bar graph show related data. While the table demonstrates the total loans by category, the bar chart illustrates total number of loans between year 2007 to 2016 inclusively. While Children's fiction and Adult fiction covered 76% of the total loan, other small loans such as Children's non-fiction, Young adults, Adult non-fiction and Adult audio books covered the other 24%. The bar chart shows continuous upward trend from 2007 to 2010 with a slight fluctuation in year 2009, after that there was a clear downward trend from year 2011 to 2013, followed by an upward trend till 2016 reaching upto 21,000 total loans.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all three charts and identifies key features. You successfully highlighted the age demographics, the loan categories, and the trend over time. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the data sets. For instance, you mention that children represent 22% of members but 38% of loans; explicitly pointing out this discrepancy between membership and loan activity would demonstrate a higher level of analytical skill. The overview is present but could be more integrated to better highlight the 'big picture' trends across the three distinct data sources.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the data. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'conversely', 'subsequently', and 'whereas' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced, particularly the use of 'subsequently' to introduce a new paragraph, which is not the most natural choice for a data summary. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between the table and the bar graph in the final paragraph could be smoother to better connect the related information.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'continuous upward trend' and 'slight fluctuation' are appropriate for describing data. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'huge amount of loan' (should be 'high volume of loans') and 'total number or loans' (a typo for 'of'). While you use some less common vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited, and the phrasing occasionally lacks the precision expected at higher bands. Focusing on more academic collocations would improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'While the table demonstrates... the bar chart illustrates...'. There are several grammatical slips, including 'total number or loans' and '38% of loan' (should be 'loans'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors, such as 'The pie-chart' (unnecessary capitalization) and 'in year 2009' (should be 'in the year 2009'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy is key.
