IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Numerous charts are illustrated about a public library in a town called Little Chalfont.

The number of loans of books has gradually increased almost every year from 2007. The category which has the most number of library members is adults 18-64 in the year 2016.

The category adults 18-64 contributes the most to the number of library members, in percentage wise adults 18-64 category alone constitutes for 51 percent of the members. 22 percent of the library members are children .Rest is divided almost equally between the categories adults 65 and over and young adults.

The total number of loans steadily increase every year except for the years 2012 and 2013. 2012 and 2013 have experienced a decrease in the total number of loans from previous year. The total number in 2007 was around 16,000 and in 2016 the number increased to around 22,000.

In the year 2016, there were two categories of books which were loaned the most, those categories are children's fiction and adult fiction, with each accounting for 38% of total loans. In contrast, categories such as children's non-fiction and adult non-fiction had relatively low shares. Children's DVD, young adults and adult audio books represented the smallest proportion.

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly, using terms like 'contributes', 'constitutes', and 'proportion'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'number of' are used frequently. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'accounted for', 'comprised', 'fluctuated', or 'a significant majority'. There are no major spelling errors, and the vocabulary used is appropriate for the task, but it lacks the sophistication required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'in percentage wise' (should be 'in terms of percentage') and 'Rest is divided' (should be 'The rest is divided'). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'The category which has the most number of library members is adults 18-64'.
