Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the visual information by reporting the main features of the charts and attempting some comparisons. An overview is provided, noting that adults occupied the highest percentage in the pie chart and that fiction loans dominated the data. Key data points are selected and reported, such as the 51% for adults and the peak in 2016 at 23,000 loans. However, there are some mechanical reporting errors and minor inaccuracies in interpreting the data categories (e.g., confusing percentages and categories between adult fiction and adult non-fiction). Despite these flaws, the prompt is adequately covered, aligning well with a Band 6.0 level where all parts are addressed though some details are slightly unclear.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response features a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to group information logically into an introduction, overview, body paragraphs, and a concluding data summary. However, paragraphing is somewhat fragmented and mechanical. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or incorrectly in places, such as starting sentences with 'Whereas,' or 'while,' without proper dependent clauses, and faulty transitional phrases like 'frequently, 1% of loan was taken'. Referencing and logical progression are occasionally hindered by punctuation and capitalization errors throughout the text. These issues place the response firmly in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range, warranting a 5.5 due to mechanical and inadequate cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'proportion', 'tabular representation', 'approximately', and 'peak point'. However, there are frequent word choice and collocation errors, such as 'proportion of age', 'pupils fiction', 'childrens dvd', and 'audio books for elder'. Spelling and morphological issues also appear, such as 'occcupied' and missing apostrophes in plurals. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main message, the inaccuracies and repetitive phrasing prevent the score from reaching higher bands. This performance reflects the descriptors for Band 5.5, showing a limited but minimally adequate range with noticeable errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases ('In terms of pie chart', 'Moving towards the rest of the information'). However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and capitalization (e.g., 'overall,in pie chart', 'number of people that had taken loan was more as compared', 'loans started from above 15,000... This figure increased'). Punctuation is often misused, separating clauses incorrectly with commas or failing to punctuate introductory elements properly. Because the errors are frequent and occasionally cause minor confusion, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
