Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by summarizing the provided charts on the Little Chalfont public library. The student identifies the main features, such as the demographic breakdown of library members, the popularity of different loan categories, and the overall growth trend in total loans over the decade. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, capturing the most significant trends. Key data points are selected and reported accurately, such as adult members at 51% and total loans peaking at around 22,000 in 2016. However, there are minor inaccuracies in reporting specific categories, such as conflating fiction and general categories, and some data is presented with slight awkwardness. Nevertheless, all three charts are addressed, and relevant comparisons are made, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into a clear introduction, an overall summary, and subsequent body paragraphs that logically address each of the three charts. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the information. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Overall', 'In addition', and 'whereas', to connect ideas and contrast data points. However, referencing and cohesion can be somewhat mechanical and repetitive, particularly with the frequent use of 'whereas' and 'accounted for'. Furthermore, the transition between sentences in the body paragraphs occasionally lacks smooth flow, leading to a slightly disjointed structure. Overall progression is apparent, but the mechanical application of cohesive features places this response firmly at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to data reporting such as 'proportion', 'category', 'growth rate', and 'highest share'. There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary, but these are accompanied by noticeable inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as 'acoounted' instead of 'accounted'. Collocations are sometimes awkward, for example, saying 'According to library members category' instead of 'Regarding the categories of library loans'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main features of the charts, the repetition of basic verbs and phrasing, combined with word choice and spelling slips, prevents the score from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures like 'whereas adult library members accounted for...'. There is good control of basic structures, but grammatical errors and awkward phrasing are present throughout the text. Examples include 'whereas children was at 22%' (agreement error), 'Adults 65 and over acoounted for the lowest share 12% in 2016' (missing preposition/punctuation), and '2016 was showed the highest number' (passive voice error). Additionally, the final sentence 'whereas 2013 was declined in 2013' contains a confusing and ungrammatical construction. Although these errors rarely impede overall communication, their frequency keeps the grammar score at a Band 5.5.
